Dropper post service

A dropper also needs maintenance. The basics: regularly clean and lubricate the tube and seals, which is what prevents stiction, play and sagging. The major service depends on the brand: on sealed cartridges (OneUp/PNW) you replace the cartridge; on some rebuildable posts, a seal kit. Neglect it and you'll end up with a post that won't go up or that sags when you sit down.

The service, from routine to major

1 · Regular cleaning — Drop the post, wipe the exposed tube clean of dust and mud and dry it. It's the single habit that prevents the most problems, because dirt on the tube is what drags the seals.
2 · Lubricate tube and seals — With the post clean, lubricate the tube and seals regularly. This prevents stiction (returning in jerks), reduces play and keeps the post going up smoothly.
3 · Major service by brand — When cleaning and lubricating is no longer enough: on sealed cartridges (OneUp/PNW) the whole cartridge is replaced; on some rebuildable posts the seals are redone with a seal kit.
