Chainstay length: agility, traction and the myth of "shorter is always better"

Chainstay length is the distance from the bottom bracket to the rear axle. Short → agile, easy manual, playful; but it unweights the front wheel when climbing. Long → stable and with more rear traction, better on technical climbs. And here is the myth to correct: "short chainstay = always more agile" is false — the effect depends on the front center and the wheelbase, not on the chainstay in isolation.

It is the rear number that gets the most romanticized ("short chainstays to play"), and the one most misunderstood when looked at alone.

Bring the rear wheel close to your feet and the bike jumps and pivots easily. Move it away and it plants and grips. That distance is the chainstay.

What it changes for you on the bike

Short chainstay → the rear wheel is close to you: lifting the front, doing a manual and repositioning the bike is easy, and it feels playful. But when climbing, your weight sits further back and the front wheel goes light and tends to lift on steep ramps. Long chainstay → more weight distributed rearward in a stable way, better rear traction and a more planted front wheel when climbing; in exchange, manuals take more effort and it feels less playful.

The fine trend: proportional chainstays per size. If the front center grows on an XL but the chainstay stays the same as on an S, the large rider ends up too far back. Lengthening the chainstay on large sizes keeps the front-rear distribution constant — which is what truly gives coherent handling across sizes.
Common mistake: "short chainstay = always more agile and better." False in isolation. A very short chainstay with a long front center leaves the bike biased rearward: it is hard to load and grip with the front in a flat corner and it lifts when climbing. Real agility is a matter of balance between chainstay and front center, not of shortening the chainstay blindly.
