Two different things that get confused. BB drop is how far the bottom bracket sits below the axle line — a frame measurement, it doesn't change with the wheels. BB height is the distance from the bottom bracket to the ground, and it does change with the wheel, the tire and the SAG. More drop = low center of gravity, better cornering and stability; but less ground clearance = more pedal strikes.
It's the measurement people mix up most online: everyone says "low bottom bracket" without distinguishing whether they mean the frame or the actual height off the ground. They aren't the same, and the difference matters.
Raise the bottom bracket on your bike and it feels perched "on top" of the wheels, easy to lean but unsteady. Lower it and you feel tucked between them, planted in the corners. That height decides much of how composed the bike feels.
BB drop is the vertical distance between the bottom bracket center and the line joining the two axles. Because it doesn't depend on the wheels, it's the clean measurement for comparing frames: more drop = bottom bracket sunk further below the axles = lower center of gravity. Typical MTB values are around 20–40+ mm depending on the model (anchor it to the specific chart).
BB height is what you actually feel and what decides whether you strike the pedals: the distance from the bottom bracket to the ground. It depends on the BB drop plus the wheel radius, the tire width and how much SAG you run. That's why a 29er with the same BB drop as a 27.5 ends up with a higher bottom bracket — the bigger wheel lifts it. And in motion, with the suspension compressed, the effective height is lower than the catalog figure.
More drop / lower bottom bracket → low center of gravity: the bike feels tucked between the wheels, stable, with plenty of grip when you lean it into a corner. The price: you strike pedals and chainrings on rocks and roots, and you have to time your pedaling better in technical terrain. Less drop / higher bottom bracket → more ground clearance and fewer pedal scares, better for very rough terrain, but the center of gravity rises and the bike feels less planted in corners.

With SAG the suspension sinks and the bottom bracket ends up lower than on the static chart.
