Wheelbase: long goes straight, short turns

The wheelbase is the horizontal distance between the front and rear axles. Long → more stable at speed and on the descent; short → more agile and easier to turn and maneuver. And it is not a stand-alone number: it is the sum of the front center (from the bottom bracket to the front axle) and the chainstay length (from the bottom bracket to the rear). That is why a wheelbase can grow at the front, at the rear or at both — and each option distributes your weight differently.

It is the number most associated with "stability", and rightly so — but the interesting part is what parts it is made of, because that is where the bike's real character lives.

Think of a long skateboard and a short one: the long one runs straight and stable, the short one pivots on a coin. Your bike is the same — the wheelbase is that length between the wheels.

What it changes for you on the bike

Long wheelbase → the bike runs nailed down at speed, forgives mistakes on the descent and feels safe in the fast and open stuff; but it takes more effort to put into tight corners and to maneuver slowly. Short wheelbase → playful, turns on a dime, easy to lift and reposition; but more nervous as the speed rises. Modern geometry has lengthened wheelbases (long reaches + slack angles) in search of composure on the descent.

The wheelbase is a consequence, not a cause: it grows when you lengthen the reach, slacken the head angle (both raise the front center) or lengthen the chainstay. That is why two bikes with the same wheelbase can distribute the weight very differently depending on where that length comes from.
Common mistake: comparing two bikes by wheelbase alone. It says a lot about stability, but nothing about the distribution: a long wheelbase with a short chainstay is rear-agile and front-long; the same wheelbase with a long chainstay distributes differently. Always look at front center and chainstay, not just the sum.
