Suspension & dropper cluster · Maintenance

How often should you service your suspension?

Quick answer

It depends on the brand. On RockShox: lower leg and air-can service every 50 h, and damper service at 100 h. On Fox: every 125 h or once a year, whichever comes first. Hard, wet or dusty use = more often. The lower leg/air-can service is the cheap, frequent one; the damper is the major one. Skipping it causes stiction, wear and leaks: that's why a harsh fork or one that's losing air is often overdue service.

The lower leg service is cheap and frequent; the damper one is major and spaced out. The trap is forgetting the first until it's already harsh.

The intervals by brand

RockShox. The lower leg and air-can service runs every 50 hours: it's the frequent maintenance that changes the bath oil, the seals and the foam rings. The damper service is the major one and comes at 100 hours.

Fox. The reference interval is every 125 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. If you ride little, the "once a year" rules; if you ride a lot, the hours rule.

On both, hard, wet or very dusty use shortens the intervals: dry summer isn't the same as winter mud.

every 125 h or once a year (whichever first)
Cheap/frequent service

If you skip it

Fork anatomy: lower legs, the air-can of the air spring and the damper, with their bath and seal service
Where each service acts: lower legs and air-can (frequent) versus the damper (major).

Why not skipping it matters

The lower leg service keeps the suspension smooth: fresh bath oil, seals that hold and foam rings that lubricate. If you skip it, stiction appears (the suspension is harsh off the top), seals and bushings wear, and leaks eventually arrive. That's why a fork that feels harsh or one that's losing air is often, simply, overdue service.

Common mistake: waiting for the fork to "actually fail" before taking it in. The cheap lower leg service done on time avoids the wear that turns that simple maintenance into a major damper repair.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours?

RockShox: lower leg/air-can every 50 h, damper at 100 h. Fox: every 125 h or once a year, whichever comes first.

Lower leg vs damper?

Lower leg/air-can is the cheap, frequent one (bath oil, seals, foam rings); the damper is the major service.

And if I skip it?

Stiction, seal and bushing wear and, over time, leaks. A cheap service becomes an expensive one.
