What is a dropper post?

What it does, in one sentence

The dropper replaces the fixed seatpost. Instead of stopping, opening the collar and moving the saddle by hand, you press a remote on the handlebar and the saddle drops under your weight; release the remote and an internal cartridge raises it again. All on the move, without stopping.

How it works inside

Actuation. The remote can pull a cable, send pressure down a hydraulic line, or be wireless. It's the part you open and close.

Return. Inside there's a cartridge that stores the energy to rise again: in some it's pressurised air, in others an internal floating piston (IFP). That cartridge is what pushes the saddle back up when you release the remote.

Saddle down on descents: the centre of gravity drops and you gain freedom of movement on the bike, which means more control on technical, steep terrain. Saddle up to pedal: it sits at its efficient height, the usual one. The point is switching from one to the other without stopping.
