Long-low-slack is the direction MTB geometry has taken over the last decade: longer reach, lower bottom bracket and slacker head angle. It came out of enduro and downhill in pursuit of composure and descending capability. Each part adds something and charges a price: long → room but demands loading the front; low → low center of gravity but pedal strikes; slack → stable but more wheel flop and clumsiness at low speed. It works when all three are balanced, not taken to the extreme.
It's the summary of all modern geometry in three words — and also the slogan that gets repeated most without nuance. Here's what's true, where it came from and where it goes too far.
Fifteen years ago bikes were short, high in the bottom bracket and steep. Today they're long, low and laid back. It wasn't fashion: it was competition enduro and downhill discovering what it took to descend fast and safe.

It's no coincidence that all three rose at once. Slackening the angle (slack) lengthens the front center, which called for a longer reach so the rider wasn't cramped; and a long reach with a slack angle lengthens the wheelbase, which called for a low bottom bracket to keep the center of gravity tucked between the wheels. Each change pushed the other two. That's why people talk about "long-low-slack" as a package, not as three independent adjustments.
Long-low-slack isn't an arrow that always points to "more". An angle that's too slack becomes lazy and sluggish at low speed from excess wheel flop; a reach that's too long leaves the rider badly positioned and unable to load the front; a bottom bracket that's too low is a magnet for pedal strikes. And it doesn't apply the same to everything: XC still prefers shorter, steeper geometries because it prioritizes climbing and maneuvering, not flat-out descending. Modern geometry works through balance —long/chainstay, slack/offset, low/travel—, not by maxing out all three words.

For descending fast, generally yes. But it pays in low speed, climbing and pedals. XC still prefers short and steep.
