How much fork travel can I run?

Quick answer

You can usually vary by ±10–20 mm from the stock travel, and many forks let you change it internally (by swapping the air shaft or with spacers). But there are two limits: 1) the maximum travel your frame is rated for (exceeding it risks the warranty and the geometry), and 2) more travel raises the front and slackens the head angle. Never exceed the maker's maximum. First confirm what fork fits your bike.

Adding travel is tempting, but it isn't just "more is better": it changes how the whole bike behaves. Here's the real range and the limits.

The range and the two limits

The usual range. In practice you can vary by around ±10–20 mm from the stock travel. Many forks let you change travel internally: by swapping the air shaft for one of a different length or by adding or removing internal spacers. Not all of them allow it, nor to any value, so check your fork maker's chart.

Limit 1 · The frame rules. The maximum travel the frame maker rates the frame for is the line you must not cross. Going beyond it affects the warranty and the geometry the frame was designed around. Don't exceed the maker's maximum.

Limit 2 · The geometry changes. More travel raises the front of the bike and slackens the head angle. You gain stability descending, but steering gets lazier when climbing and at low speed. It's a change in behaviour, not just comfort.
