TANDEM BICYCLE SERVICE IN TRUJILLO — SYNCHRONOUS DRIVETRAIN KINEMATICS
Two riders. One synchronized drivetrain. Double mechanical complexity.
A tandem bicycle is not two bikes. It is a mechanically coupled system where the Captain (front rider) and Stoker (rear rider) pedal simultaneously, but their drivetrains are independent, connected only by the timing chain that runs parallel to the frame.
The total power delivered to the drivetrain in a tandem is the sum of the torques from both bottom brackets at the pedaling cadence:
P_total = 2π × n × (τ_captain + τ_stoker) / 60
Where n is the cadence in RPM, τ_captain is the torque at the Captain Bottom Bracket (front) and τ_stoker is the torque at the Stoker Bottom Bracket (rear). A combined pair of 75 kg cyclists can easily generate a sustained 400–600 W, subjecting the bottom bracket bearings to fatigue loads far exceeding those of a single bike. For this reason, tandem service intervals must be proportionally more frequent.
The timing chain synchronizes the pedaling phase between Captain and Stoker. Its tension must be correctly set: too loose causes skipping and noise; too tight increases wear on both timing ring bearings and both bottom brackets simultaneously.
Protocol 2.0 — Full scope of the tandem technical service
- Timing chain: complete cleaning, elongation inspection, lubrication with Finish Line White Grease PTFE and tension adjustment at the timing chain tensioner
- Captain Bottom Bracket: extraction of the front bottom bracket, BB shell cleaning, bearing inspection, repacking with SKF LGHP 2 grease or full bearing replacement if play or noise is detected
- Stoker Bottom Bracket: same procedure for the rear bottom bracket (Stoker BB), including frame interface inspection and certified torque
- Timing rings: tooth wear inspection on both timing rings (Captain-side and Stoker-side), cleaning and lubrication of fixing interfaces
- Main drive chain: cleaning with technical degreaser, elongation inspection with chain wear indicator, lubrication specific to high torque load
- Stoker cockpit: inspection of stoker stem, handlebar, grip clamps and position adjustment per Stoker's requirements
- Headset: play inspection, repacking with Motorex Bike Grease 2000, preload adjustment and certified torque
- Front and rear hubs: lateral and axial play inspection, cone or sealed bearing lubrication depending on hub type
- Brake system: Captain and Stoker lever inspection, cable adjustment or hydraulic bleed, bite point and rotor/rim alignment verification
- Full drivetrain: cassette, chainring, front and rear derailleur cleaning and lubrication; limit and cable tension adjustment
- Certified final torque: all serviced fastening points torqued to manufacturer specification for frame and components
- Frame inspection: visual check of welds, Stoker BB zone and timing chain tensioner anchor points
Why almost no workshops in Peru offer this service
Tandem technical service requires deep understanding of the dual drivetrain system. It is not enough to know how to replace a standard bottom bracket: the mechanic must understand the mechanical relationship between the Captain BB, Stoker BB and timing chain, and how the tension of each element affects the whole system.
At BikeLab Studio we use Liqui-Moly copper paste for aluminum-stainless steel interfaces at the Stoker BB (common on tandems with aluminum frames and titanium or stainless steel axles). We use SKF LGHP 2 for all bottom bracket bearings due to its high fatigue resistance under sustained radial load, and Motorex Bike Grease 2000 for the headset and precision hubs.
Tandem cyclists tend to be the most technically demanding riders in the community. They know their components, understand which lubricants are used and why. At BikeLab Studio we work at the same level of technical rigor.

Frequently Asked Questions_
What makes tandem service different from a standard bicycle service?
A tandem has two completely independent drivetrains connected by a timing chain. This means two bottom brackets (Captain BB and Stoker BB), two sets of timing rings, two cockpits and twice the mechanical adjustment points. The work time is proportionally greater and requires specific knowledge of the dual drivetrain system.
What is the timing chain on a tandem?
The timing chain connects the Captain's bottom bracket (front rider) with the Stoker's bottom bracket (rear rider), synchronizing the pedaling of both cyclists. Its tension, lubrication and condition are critical for tandem operation. A poorly adjusted timing chain causes vibration, noise and premature wear on both bottom brackets simultaneously.
What lubricants do you use for tandem service?
For bottom bracket and hub bearings we use SKF LGHP 2 (high-temperature synthetic grease, ISO VG 460 class). For the headset we apply Motorex Bike Grease 2000. On titanium-aluminum or stainless steel interfaces we use Liqui-Moly copper paste. For the timing chain and drive chain we apply Finish Line White Grease PTFE for its anti-adhesive properties and high torque load resistance.
Can I bring a tandem bike to your workshop in Trujillo?
Yes. The workshop has capacity to receive tandem bicycles. Due to the dimensions of a tandem (typically 2.8 to 3.2 meters in length), we recommend coordinating drop-off in advance via WhatsApp to ensure adequate space and technician availability. Calle Paraguay 300, Urb. El Recreo, Trujillo.
