Tier 1 · Hugely noticeable
The first thing that defines the bike
Head tube angle(~1°) Changes the entire character: composure on descents vs agility. It acts via the trail, which also drags front center and wheelbase. The one that most defines how the bike "feels" at speed.
Reach(~10–15 mm) Decides whether the bike fits you and how you ride standing on descents. A few mm outside your range are felt in position, control and confidence. It matters more than the S/M/L size.
Tier 2 · Clearly noticeable
Defines how it climbs and how it plants
Effective seat tube angle(~1°) Rules the seated climb: weight, efficiency and whether the front wheel lifts. Very sensitive because it also changes with your saddle height.
Bottom bracket drop(a few mm) A few millimeters change the composure in corners and the frequency of pedal strikes. Pure center of gravity.
Wheelbase(~20 mm) Straight and calm vs agile and maneuverable. Noticed above all when comparing opposite terrains (high speed vs tight corner).
Tier 3 · Finer nuance
Fine-tune around the above
Chainstay length(~5–10 mm) Changes the balance and the manuals, but its effect is more subtle and very dependent on which front center it is combined with.
Stack(~10–20 mm) Very felt in comfort and position, less in "performance". Plus it is easily adjusted with spacers and bars.
Fork offset(a few mm) Fine-tunes the weight of the steering and the wheel flop at low speed. Real, but the finest of all for the average rider.
How to use it: when buying, get Tier 1 right first (reach + angle) — they are the ones you can't fix with parts. Tier 2 you choose with the size and the model; Tier 3 is fine-tuned afterward with setup and components. And avoid the common mistakes reading the chart.
