Erwin Schrödinger in What is Life? (1944) introduced the concept of negentropy: living organisms stay far from thermodynamic equilibrium by importing order — negentropy — from the environment. The bicycle, being a dissipative mechanical system, requires exactly the same mechanism. The workshop is the source of negentropy that the second law demands.

Prigogine's decomposition dS/dt = d_eS/dt + d_iS/dt separates the problem into controllable and uncontrollable parts. d_iS/dt is inevitable: use always generates internal entropy. But d_eS/dt is the mechanic's lever: when the entropy flow exported to the exterior exceeds internal production, the bicycle accumulates order instead of disorder.

Quantitatively, a complete maintenance service at BikeLab introduces measurable negentropy: replacing oxidized lubricant with clean lubricant in a bearing reduces the system's configurational entropy by an amount proportional to the difference in viscosity and purity. Installing new bearings with correct tolerances reduces structural entropy by several orders of magnitude compared to worn components.

New bearings (negative d_eS): operating temperature reduction of 8°C. Clean and lubricated transmission: recovery of 7-12W of power. Calibrated brakes: braking distance reduction 15-20%. Trued wheel: elimination of lateral vibration > 0.3 mm TIR.

Negentropy has a half-life in the system. Once introduced through maintenance, d_iS/dt continues producing entropy with every kilometer ridden. The gained order decreases exponentially per M(t) = M₀·e^(−λt). The optimal maintenance frequency is that which keeps system S at a level where the bicycle operates with maximized efficiency, safety and useful life.

FIELD NOTE — BIKELAB, TRUJILLO

Bicycles arriving without maintenance for more than 12 months in La Libertad show system S between 3-5× greater than a bicycle with annual service. The necessary intervention is more extensive, more costly, and recoverable negentropy is lower because accumulated d_iS has already produced irreversible damage in some components.

The workshop does not repair bicycles. It introduces negentropy into dissipative systems that the second law destines to disorder. The difference between a workshop that understands physics and one that does not lies in diagnosis, material selection, and intervention intervals. Negentropy is not improvised: it is calculated.
